God has been taking us to places we never saw coming, and we just keep saying yes! Our teaching style is starting to make some noise in the local community so we have been branching out more, meeting some inspiring people, and getting to work with some amazing kids.

On Tuesday, we were invited by our friends at MercyAir to spend the day at the Children's Crisis in Diaspora Mission School in Msholozi - right up the road from our house. The school welcomes 63 immigrant children who are ineligible for government schooling. They offer Christ-centered education and aim to raise up a "Jesus Generation" of youth ready to step up in their community.

We taught a full music lesson inside, then headed outside for some musical fun and games, and even met a wonderful 6th grade girl named Susan who plays guitar. She accompanied the class on my guitar as we did our vocal warmups!

Thank you to Pastor Jeremiah, who runs the Mission School. We will definitely be back in a few weeks as soon as the kids return from holiday break!

It has been an honor to be used by God in so many new and unexpected ways, and we are excited and ready for what's next!

It's really hot. There's no electricity, but even if there was - there's defiinitely no AC. Tiles are falling off the walls. School uniforms are tattered with holes everywhere. There might not be enough food at home. These kids are SURROUNDED by problems. When that's all they see every day, hope could easily be lost.

But when they choose to come together and lift the name of Jesus together in song, everything changes. It's not about the problems surrounding them - it becomes about WHO surrounds us all. This is how the primary school singers in VUSELELA fight their battles. How do you fight yours?

Unfortunately, I'm nursing an injured back... so please take this video of last week's new sections of music as a substitute for what we WOULD have done today. Rehearsals are back on tomorrow and Monday regardless of if I can stand or not.

Harmonies are getting tighter, they are settling in to the songs, and they really took to "Holy Ground" by Hillsong Worship quickly. Keep your eyes out for a couple of young soloists SOON :)

Here is where the real change happens: kids and parents giving their time freely to do work for others because it's what Jesus would be doing on His Saturday afternoon.

We had our first community service day today, and wow... it was amazing.

And we are tired...

Slightly less than half of what we planned actually went how we planned it, but the kids did great work, sang well, ate well, and left with smiles on their faces. We had 3 parent volunteers come to help, plus one volunteer from Mercy Air where we are staying. People are getting on board, and it's awesome.

Hopefully @The Cove Church SA is cleaner than it was when we got there. Thank you for welcoming us with open arms and allowing us to share this building and this beautiful community with you.

#behindthescenes It's a lot of hard work preparing to care for and teach a room full of young people you are just getting to know. We spend most of our days away from the church focused on planning lessons, prepping food, sourcing supplies, and in meetings.

Occasionaly, an issue comes to my attention that just can't be ignored. I either act or I lie awake for days wishing I would have done something about it.

The near constant smell of Swiss cheese emanating from our living space is exactly such an issue. It's not all fun and games here, people. My girls love their Swiss. Protest music has begun.

It has officially begun! Rehearsal one is in the books and VUSELELA is ON!

Woke up at the sweet, sweet hour of 5:00am 🥱 to pack the car and make the drive to Hazyview. We didn't sleep well with all the anticipation, but by the time we hit the road we were excited and awake.

We spent a couple hours getting things set up - balloons, banners, PA system, projector, check in table - in anticipation for the (wait for it) *FOUR KIDS* who were there at our 10am start time. 😳

I'm not going to lie here...

We both were kind of freaking out. There was NOBODY there. We ended up hearing that some of the kids had school that morning (South African high schools often have school on the weekends to prepare for testing and such) and that they might be coming late. Slowly, more kids trickled in. When we could wait no more, we finally got rolling with the 20 or so kids who were there.

As we were singing, more and more kids started showing up. By the time we stopped for lunch and devotion, Jo was actually worried if we would have enough food!

We came back to the main room for more singing with over 60 kids! It was just amazing. The kids were into what we were doing. We were all working together and vibing really well. The music came together quickly. I just can't say enough good things about it. It had been a few years since I was in front of a choir, and man... have I missed it.

The real joy that we are chasing, however, is to be living God's purpose for our lives and using what HE gave us in all the right ways. It just becomes effortless when the Holy Spirit is driving the bus. I mean - it is exhausting work, but it feels effortless. It's impossible to explain, but I know some of you know exactly what we are talking about.

Today is a day we will remember for the rest of our lives.

1️⃣ day until it all starts.

It feels like we've been working towards this for years (which I suppose we have.) From the first quiet inspiration for our mission all the way to preparing food for the kids an hour ago - everything we've done has led to this.

We've had days in Africa where we've experienced incredible victories - like having over 50 kids turn in consent forms for the choir right out the gate and seeing our daughter just blossom in this new environment. Those types of things have inspired us and given us hope.

We've also had days where Africa kicked us in the teeth until we tapped out and just called it a day. We've had more of those days than I expected going into this, if I'm being honest.

But no matter what the day brought, this picture centers me and reminds me why we are here. It is simply an empty room - that my wife helped to build - waiting to be filled with joy, community, and praise lifted up by kids who are choosing to spend their time singing to Jesus rather than anything else.

All the prayers. All the effort. All the sad goodbyes to our friends and family. All of it has led to this.

There's only 1️⃣ thing left to do, and that's to do the thing.

You are also looking at 2️⃣ people who decided to jump off of that hamster wheel. 2️⃣ people who were brought together and refined by God to do something they never would have predicted. 2️⃣ people who heard the call and weren't afraid to answer it.

I have no idea how any of this will ultimately play out, but when we take our last breath, we can say that we walked together into this mission without fear.

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him." Psalm 28:7

With only 4️⃣ days left until our first rehearsal, I wasn't sure what to post about. Then Jo sent me this picture of Lexi and it all became clear.

Those of you who know her know what a blessing she is to this world, but also how difficult it can be sometimes for her to exist in it. We were prayerfully optimistic about how the transition across the world would go for her, but what has happened has just blown any hopes we had for her completely out of the water.

This picture with these 4️⃣ kids says it all. Look at her face. 🥹

Not one person here has given her a weird look, made her feel out of place, or ignored her out of confusion. All of the kids in the community, all of the staff at The Cove Church SA , and everyone we meet around town just accepts her and loves her - exactly how she is. As a parent, that's all you want for your kid.

She is living her best life here - making friends and not being timid or afraid about anything. People are genuinely drawn to her. She comes on every adventure with us and looks out for those around her while they look out for her.

That's what the VUSELELA choir is all about and why it will work here. We are all in this together.

On our website - www.genesisdirective.org - we created a role for Lexi on the team called "Happiness and Inclusion Officer." She is crushing it and may be up for a promotion to "Happiness, Inclusion, and Unashamed Dancing Queen Officer" if she keeps up the good work.

This past week, we met with local school leaders and were able to share our vision for their students and community.

Principals have been very kind and genuinely excited about the VUSELELA choir. We have been invited to speak to parents of all students at two primary schools so far. We will be meeting with high school leaders this upcoming week.

The students leave for winter break today (the seasons are opposite from the US) so we are working out logistics to begin rehearsals when they return to class in July.

The Cove Church SA, its leaders, and staff have all been so supportive of our ministry and our move. We cannot express enough gratitude for the way they have welcomed us into their community.

Thank you all for your prayers and support as we begin this journey together with the students of Mpumalanga!

Thoughts on our "U.S. FAREWELL TOUR - 2025"

We have great friends. We have great family. We belong to an amazing church.
We have never felt such a wild mix of joy, sadness, anticipation, and apprehension all at the same time quite like we just did.

It honestly felt like a living funeral. Everyone was talking to us like they would never see us again, which was weird at first... then we realized how we were all saying the things that we had always wanted to say to each other. Why don't we do that every day? It was a great lesson to us to not waste any time when we are together and to always speak truth.

Now that we are in Africa and our minds are starting to shift back into work mode, creative mode, problem solving mode, and (even sometimes) survival mode - we made so many memories over the past few months that it would be a shame to not revisit them.

We have great friends. We have great family. We belong to an amazing church.
We have never felt such a wild mix of joy, sadness, anticipation, and apprehension all at the same time quite like we just did.

It honestly felt like a living funeral. Just a quick update before we call it a night... We have arrived safely to South Africa with all of our luggage in tow and all guitars FULLY FUNCTIONAL!

Every step on the way out of the US caused difficulty - from having to repack every one of our bags at the gate, to deplaning at CLT before replaning and sitting for another hour, to sitting on the plane at ATL for 2 hours waiting - but life has been smooth sailing so far in South Africa.

Just a quick update before we call it a night... We have arrived safely to South Africa with all of our luggage in tow and all guitars FULLY FUNCTIONAL!

Every step on the way out of the US caused difficulty - from having to repack every one of our bags at the gate, to deplaning at CLT before replaning and sitting for another hour, to sitting on the plane at ATL for 2 hours waiting - but life has been smooth sailing so far in South Africa.

Sincere thanks to City of Concord NC Fire Department and the firefighters at Station 12. We had to make an unplanned stop in their parking lot today to assess some issues with our trailer and the guys of Station 12 stepped up BIG TIME to help get us back on the road quickly and safely.

While some were helping us with repairs, some others were kind enough to give Lexi the grand tour of the station. She was very excited about that 🙂

My dad would be proud to know there are firefighters still working hard every day to make this world a better place - even if it's one pipe wrench torque at a time, as it was for us today.

Nothing good comes easily and God's timing is always perfect.

We worked with an immigration specialist in South Africa for 6 months to prepare all of the paperwork required to apply for visas. When everything was finally together, we made an appointment at the South African embassy in D.C. After months of hard work, many setbacks and frustration, as well as some victories along the way - we received our South African visas and are ready to begin our mission!
